Diamond plate, also known as checker plate, tread plate and Durbar floor plate, is a type of lightweight metal stock with a regular pattern of raised diamonds or lines on one side, with the reverse side being featureless. Diamond plate is usually steel, stainless steel or aluminum. Steel types are normally made by hot rolling, although modern manufacturers also make a raised and pressed diamond design.Diamond plate also known as tread plate or checkered plate has many applications across all industries.
How it’s made?
It is made in two ways.”Stamped” witch is really two giant rollers, one smooth the other with a stamped pattern. So the pressure of both of these rolls embossed a pattern on one side and other side remains the same (smooth). The other way is done with a electronic thermal machine that flash heats the product making it molten and then it cools in the shape. If you look at most diamond plate, you will notice that only one side of it features the diamond pattern. This is due to the fact that only one roller in the set has the diamond shaped pattern on it, so one side of the metal is exposed to it while the other is left smooth. For aluminum, this process “stamps” the pattern onto the plate, whereas with steel, hot rolling is generally used. This involves heating a slab of steel above its re crystallization temperature and then bringing it through a series of smooth rollers to its desired thickness. Heating the metal above its re crystallization temperature helps to prevent major alterations in mechanical properties due to work hardening. Once the material has reached its final shape, it is allowed to cool slowly.
Use of Diamond Plate
The added texture reduces the risk of slipping, making diamond plate a solution for stairs, catwalks, walkways, and ramps in industrial settings. Its non-skid properties mean that diamond plate is frequently used on the interior of ambulances and on the footplates of firetrucks. Additional applications include truck beds and trailer floors.Diamond plate is commonly used on stairs or ramps in industrial areas, which helps to reduce the chance of slipping on the metal. Aluminum, stainless steel and hot rolled steel diamond plate can be used as an accent for architectural elements or furniture.
